The Fresh Apple line from Skin Food is pretty immense. They have a sparkling line, a regular line, several creams, toners, emulsions, sun creams, cleansers, and more, which is pretty impressive. When the line first appeared, I really wanted to try some of it out! I was able to get a small Toner and Emulsion set, as well as samples of the Pore Cream. To clarify before I continue with this review, this is the Sparkling Pore Cream, and not the Smooth Pore Cream. They are pretty similar in name and look, but are in fact two separate items.
Skin Food's Fresh Apple Sparkling Pore Cream
(3.5 out of 5)
Now, I was only able to get samples of this cream, but I did buy a bundle of them (about 10 plus), so I was able to really try it out. The main difference between this cream and the other one is that this one is more of a gel, while the other is a thick cream. Because it has more of a gel texture to it, it's good for oily or sensitive skin because it won't clog your pores and cause breakouts. The cream is made with carbonated water and Green Apple extracts. The apple has a cooling effect on your skin, and helps calm any irritation or itchiness. It also contains different vitamins and kills bacteria in your skin, and that's why Apple has recently shown up in several different skin products. I've tried the Tony Moly Appletox Honey Cream before, but it has a sticky texture and moisturizes differently that this one. The packaging of the full sized product is a tub shaped jar, with pastel type colors and the classic Skin Food Angel logo. Because it's in a tub, you would have to be careful of bacteria or germs getting inside of it. While it's not the worst thing to use a tub, for some people it's a deal-breaker.
The product claims to help control sebum (the dirt, oil, etc. inside of your pores), and in turn reduce the size of your pores. Because my main skin problem comes from blackheads and enlarged pores, I was pretty excited when my samples showed up in the mail! The gel has a slight white tinge to it, and it doesn't tingle or anything from the carbonated water. It spreads smoothly on your face, and doesn't tug or pull on your skin at all. I felt that it has the perfect texture to it, and I was able to massage it in easily, which is a great bonus. This is a lighter moisturizer, and I applied a couple layers of it to my face at a time, with about a pea-sized amount each turn. Since the consistancy of it is so light, and not heavy like a cream or lotion, it felt refreshing to apply, and felt comfortable on my skin. My skin didn't feel really moist after I used it, but it didn't feel tight or dry either. I really hoped that it would moisturize a bit better personally. My skin didn't feel softer once I applied it, but it did feel a bit softer when I woke up in the morning. There wasn't too much of a difference when it came to softness or texture after I used it though. I also didn't see a dramatic difference when it came to the size of my pores or amount of blackheads. They didn't get worse, but they didn't get much better either. After I stopped using the cream, my skin didn't look as good when I did though, so I can't say that it doesn't do anything for you. I would say that it's better for maintaining your skin and pore size, but not for improving it.
Overall, I didn't hate the product, and it didn't make my skin worse, but I didn't love it either. I gave it a 3.5 out of 5 because it didn't improve my skin as advertised, and didn't moisturize as much as I would have liked. I will say that I was happy to use something that didn't clog my pores, like other creams and lotions that I've used in the past. I think it's definitely worth a try if you're looking for something lighter, and closer to a skin gel than cream. I found packs of samples on Ebay and Amazon for between $5-$10, depending on how many you want. Though, because the names and packaging are so similar, make sure to double check before ordering samples (I accidentally bought the wrong samples the first time, and got double of two kinds). You can also buy the full version of the cream on Cosmetic Love for about $20 Here. Because you use so little for each application, it will last you a while. If you've tried it yourself, let me know what you though in the comments! Sometimes products will work differently depending on your skin type, so it's good to get information from several different people. (If you're wondering, I have sensitive-combination skin.) I think that it is good enough to try out, especially if you're lucky enough to get samples!
See you next time you jump down the Rabbit hole,
